I was just reading from The Message, and I was really struck by what I read. So I thought I would share.

Study: Unpatched PC's compromised in 20 minutes.
No browsing, no downloading, no e-mail necessary. Just take your new Windows PC out of the box, plug it into your Internet connection, and it will be infected by a malicious worm inside of 20 minutes, before you even have time to download updates for it. Crazy.

I finally got to ride a Segway last night.
Lara and I decided that we hadn't been to Disneyland in a while, so after work we drove down to Anaheim, stopping for dinner at In-N-Out along the way. The Innoventions attraction in Disneyland has a Segway HT up on the third floor where people can take rides; Lara and I waited in line, signed release forms acknowledging that riding the Segway at its low-speed setting in a small controlled area may result in paralysis, dismemberment, and/or death, and finally got each got the chance to take a Segway for a spin. Well, sort of.

The change to a new weblog platform prompted me to finally update the design of the site. I think it's brighter and more cheerful, a pleasant departure from the cold, metallic look of the previous design. The topics have been adjusted slightly to reflect how we were actually using them, and the post archives are now also accessible by date like most blogs.
We recently posted a summary of what we've been doing the past few months; see the "What have we been up to?" post below for that. I've also posted a fairly technical account of the switch from the old weblog platform to the new, if you're one of the few who are interested in that kind of thing. That's under "The great migration".
In any case, leave us some comments! Let us know you were here and what you think of the new site. And if you're using Movable Type with a Berkeley DB database, get your data into MySQL immediately!

It all started so innocently. I asked my web hosting service about a way to let users change their own passwords. Little did I know that three days later I would have replaced my blog software, my site design, and my server platform...but not before passing painfully through the fires of CSS incompatibility and broken databases.
Note that this is long and technical. :-)

Well, that was quite the ordeal. I managed to get all the entries migrated from the old weblog into the new system, and replace the system's rather bland default look with a brand-new theme. More details coming tomorrow.

So you're probably wondering what's going on here. This doesn't look anything like the page you might have seen before. Well, I moved the site to a different server with more room to grow, and only discovered afterwards that Movable Type has serious problems when it's uprooted. So I'm busy repairing the site to get it back to where it was.
In the meantime, go visit Homestar Runner and play Peasant's Quest!
